Day 131. 31 .08.2011

11:30

131 DAYS HAS ARRIVED!!!!!

1 day away from the night of the opening….

I cannot believe its a day before the opening of the exhibition. We have reached the 131 day mark , of blogging and documenting the process leading up to the actual day of the exhibition. It has been extremely challenging , working everyday to ensure  that this exhibition is everything I had envisioned it to be. I realized that not everything is perfect , but I do hope it is close to it.

Surprisingly I woke up feeling calm today. This doesn't mean I am not nervous , nor am I feeling ultra confident. I have left it in the hands of the Art Gods lol. I am looking forward to seeing the outcome of 131 days.

I did my make-up trial yesterday and I too , tried on my garment for the first time. I am extremely happy with everything. What excited me the most about the make-up trial is that I didn't start crying when the eyeliner was applied on the bottom area of my eye. People grow up after all.

After meeting up with my glam team , I met up with Emkay from Doepelganger. Oooooohhhhhhweeee the mix is sick. I love it , I love it and I love it.

I have packed the last few cases of wine in the car , as well as the other things that need to be delivered. After my classes today , I will be heading to the gallery ,  to see the pieces up on the wall for the first time , and perhaps even check out the music system.

131 days will continue to exist. I will start on a new project every year , from the 23rd April - 1st September , where I focus on a different sphere of the arts. Thank you to everyone who took the time to look through my blog , tweet about it on Twitter , put up the poster as their BBM display picture , mention it on Facebook , sing praises about the concept and support me in any form that I haven't mentioned.

THANK YOU

Day 128. 28 .08.2011

12:00

Due to my sisters 21st birthday party and the jam I had last night, I had to cancel my meeting with Nolo, my stylist Tshakgi and my make-up trial with Patiance. EEEEEK!

I needed this break but its time to get back to business. I have so much to do this week; I am surely going to need all the help I can get. I have been showered with love, support and offers (in terms of needing assistance) and I couldn’t be anymore grateful than I am already.

Tonight, I will be setting up appointments for this week, to meet up with specific team members, which will have to be before Wednesday. After Thursday, I wont have to feel like a crazy person anymore hehe.

Day 127. 27 .08.2011

12:30

The countdown begins…

I haven’t been on the net in these past few days and I apologize for the late updates, however, it if means anything, I have been writing everyday. Due to my lack of Internet access, I haven’t been able to see if 131 days and ‘The moments’ amidst the chaos have had any new features. So I spent my morning looking through my favourite blogs and the net, to catch up on the cyber world, and on the urbanmosadi blog, is a feature of the exhibition.

What I love about this blog is as well as Tiisetso Molobo not only documents her life, but she highlights the mood too. It’s rare that you find photographers who are able to do both extremely well.

Day 126. 26 .08.2011

10:45-11:15

I have just dropped off the pieces at Rococo Studio Gallery in Buitenkant, which is the venue of my exhibition.  The wine and series of works are now at the gallery. Deryck and I have officially confirmed everything that is still needed to be done , and have planned to next meet on Wednesday , after all the pieces have been put up and the gallery has been set up for the opening.

11:15

Tshakgi Mannya of Aluxism, who is my stylist, has informed me that she will be landing in the next two hours in Cape Town. This is exciting, as I will soon be able to see my garment. She has also informed me that she will be bringing a friend and make-up artist with her, Patiance Mavuso (who I actually got to meet in Long Street later that afternoon)  to do my make-up for the night .

Day 125 . 25 .08.2011

15:30

My mom and I have just picked up my pieces and I am thrilled. Throughout this process, I have been calm and focused on the main goal, that I haven’t made time to absorb my moment.
As I walked into John’s home and studio, he welcomed me with the most infectious grin and as I approached the lounge, there were my pieces, sealed in plastic. I immediately dropped my bag on the couch and grabbed the nearest canvas.

Deryck was right; John Rivett is the ‘Master Printer’. The quality of the print is by far the best that I have seen my work printed in. He showed me the different sizes that we had discussed, showed me his favourite pieces in the collection, and advised me on some techniques for signing the collection and other stuff.

We packed the works in the boot, and as we were driving home, I couldn’t help but look behind every 2 minutes to check if my newborn (the collection) was okay hehe.
Tomorrow, I will be dropping off the prints as well as the wine.

My pieces are done. They all have been printed, stretched and are now ready to be picked up. Tomorrow I will be picking all the pieces from John.  I will probably be delivering them to the gallery on Friday, along with the Morkel wine that was donated by Dirkie Morkel of Bellevue wine estate.

Day 123 . 23 .08.2011

8 days left.

My day was made today, when the lovely Makosha ‘Em Kay’ Maja sent me a link of the kind of music she will be mixing for the opening of the exhibition. I am looking forward to the complete meticulous collection of music, which is created to complement my theme and personality, by Makosha ‘Em Kay’ Maja and Mmaphuthi ‘Muptee’ Morule. These Doepelganger ladies, including Yang Zhao, are masterminds when it comes to the arts and especially music.
Every time I kept on suggesting potential tracks to include in the mix, Em Kay re-assured me by saying ‘don’t worry’, which is virtually impossible for me to do. It’s clear she was right.

Day 121 . 21 .08.2011

Today is officially 10 days until the 31st August.  By the end of the month, everything will be done and all that will be left to do is go crazy for the next 24 hours until the doors open on the 1st September. Don’t get me wrong, I have 100% faith in myself, but I have also given myself allowance to be a bit crazy.
The documentary brief is done. The next step is to send it to Nolo, and knowing him, he will bounce off my ideas and come up with much better ones. When writing this brief I felt stuck. I know what I want to document, but the element whereby everything should flow is where I was struggling.
The next thing to attend too on my ‘to do’ list is to check on the mixtape, as well as the garments I will be wearing on the night.
As the days become less and less, it seems as if there is more and more to do.

Day 119 . 19 .08.2011

I have completed the electronic list for the collection. This entails the following information; title, medium, size and price. I will also be sending the artist statement, 72 dpi resolution copies of the collection, my C.V as well as the poster to Deryck.  All of this will be used for the opening and the rest of the month that the exhibition will be running at Rococo Studio Gallery.
I spoke to John Rivett of Masterprints, who is printing and stretching my images, and he has confirmed that the printing process will be done today. I wasn’t aware that he has already started, so the only thing left for him to do is to stretch the prints.
Today I will be focusing on the outfit that I will be wearing on the night of the opening, and making my final decision.
12 days left until the end of the month…

Day 118 . 18 .08.2011

13 days left until the end of the month. There is so much I want to share about the opening and a side project that I will be doing with a great group of women; however I can’t at this point in time.
I am writing the brief for my documentary. I am collaborating  with Lehlohonolo ‘Nolo” Molapo on this project and I am keen to get some testosterone on board. I am currently working with a lot of females, so this gentleman is refreshing . This week is the brainstorming period and next week we begin shooting. I am too keen to kill it.
My prints are being printed this weekend and will most probably be ready next weekend. Next week, once I have majority of the things that need to be delivered, such as the wine and prints complete, I will be making my way to drop it all off and  begin to visually conceptualize once again at the gallery.  I have officially given all the images titles and today will be organizing the electronic list to Deryck , who is the curator of the exhibition and the gallery manager.
I am expecting over 100 people at the opening, and so I am extremely excited to see those attending. I have a lot of work to do every single day, along with my assignments at school, but the major support from my friends and people I don’t know , is really the one thing that keeps me going.

Day 112 . 12 .08.2011

I am so excited about my guest speaker. He is someone who has been in the industry for years, an amazing ambassador for South Africa through the arts and more importantly, someone who has known me for a long time. I think I will keep the guest speakers name a secret, as I want my guests to have something to look forward too.

Last night I bummed into Makosha ‘Emkay’ Maja of the dynamic Doepelganger, at Fatback soul in Long Street. We spoke briefly about an exciting project and the mixtape that she is making for the opening which will also be used for the documentary. I am meeting up with her tomorrow to discuss it all, the mix tape, the collaborative and our vision. I am highly looking forward to it.

I got home from campus and on the kitchen counter , I see six cases of wine. 30 bottles of Tumara ( red) and 6 bottles of Sauvignon blanc (white). Thank you , thank you Dirkie Morkel and Bellevue wine estate for your extremely generous donation. I am looking forward to sharing your amazing wine with my guests. I am so overwhelmed by everyones love and support in these past two days. I am beginning to get a knot in my stomach.

Day 110 . 10 .08.2011

21 days left until the opening and so much to do. I took a few street fashion shots for my dear friend and Fashion Editor of ELLE, Asanda Sizani last week Sunday at Cold Turkey. There were so many amazing individuals, who took pride in dressing up for the occasion.  Many of the women were camera shy; however I managed to persuade them into posing for the camera.
I was aware that they would be posted on the blog and I would receive credit for my work, but I didn’t expect the full on feature that was posted. Thank you so much to the ELLE team. You truly made my day

Day 109 . 09 .08.2011

All the images are finally in for printing. Some of the chosen pictures were too small for printing, as I had them on 72dpi instead of 300dpi. This meant I had to find the raw images, tweak them a bit so that they look presentable and deliver all the copies to Masterprints. I walked into the room, a bit nervous to give John Rivett my complete collection, but the sounds of Madonna put me at ease. With less than 22 days left, I am finally seeing things come together.

Day 108 . 08 .08.2011

Its day and 108 , which means I have 23 days left. I received an email today, from Dirkie Morkel from the Bellevue wine farm in Stellenbosch. He will be delivering the bottles of wine , that he so generously donated for the opening , sometime this week. Thank you once again Dirkie.  It is womans day tomorrow , and so I will be sending in the last few images of the collaboration in for printing. I will be making calls to each of my team members and have a much needed feedback session. In these last few days , I need to make sure that everyone is on track as the opening is in just over three weeks.

Day 106 . 06 .08.2011

Today it is officially 25 days away from the opening. I am working on the last images that need to be sent in for printing. I am feeling slightly calmer than I was towards the end of July. The end is near and my team seems to be getting bigger and bigger. I have met so many talented people, who still have that hunger that one tends to lose once they have established themselves and I get to work with them.

Half of my prints have gone in for printing, and the rest will be sent in early next week.

Last night was my friend Lulama Dingani's birthday gathering at Ragazzi Lounge in Long Street. I was able to slip in a quick meeting regarding the documentary , during the evening. We decided on dates to shoot , the important aspects to focus on and mostly we bounced idea's off each other. It went really well and so during this week , I will be finalizing the dates to shoot with my team . I will also be deciding what it is that I would like to have documented. The great thing about this collaboration , is that we share the same vision and are open to a lot of spontaneity .
