20 September 2011

I received a tweet from Rococo Studio Gallery , that the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography are going to go view my work today. This is the most exciting news that I have heard in a while.

Day 126. 26 .08.2011

10:45-11:15

I have just dropped off the pieces at Rococo Studio Gallery in Buitenkant, which is the venue of my exhibition.  The wine and series of works are now at the gallery. Deryck and I have officially confirmed everything that is still needed to be done , and have planned to next meet on Wednesday , after all the pieces have been put up and the gallery has been set up for the opening.

11:15

Tshakgi Mannya of Aluxism, who is my stylist, has informed me that she will be landing in the next two hours in Cape Town. This is exciting, as I will soon be able to see my garment. She has also informed me that she will be bringing a friend and make-up artist with her, Patiance Mavuso (who I actually got to meet in Long Street later that afternoon)  to do my make-up for the night .

Day 119 . 19 .08.2011

I have completed the electronic list for the collection. This entails the following information; title, medium, size and price. I will also be sending the artist statement, 72 dpi resolution copies of the collection, my C.V as well as the poster to Deryck.  All of this will be used for the opening and the rest of the month that the exhibition will be running at Rococo Studio Gallery.
I spoke to John Rivett of Masterprints, who is printing and stretching my images, and he has confirmed that the printing process will be done today. I wasn’t aware that he has already started, so the only thing left for him to do is to stretch the prints.
Today I will be focusing on the outfit that I will be wearing on the night of the opening, and making my final decision.
12 days left until the end of the month…

Day 118 . 18 .08.2011

13 days left until the end of the month. There is so much I want to share about the opening and a side project that I will be doing with a great group of women; however I can’t at this point in time.
I am writing the brief for my documentary. I am collaborating  with Lehlohonolo ‘Nolo” Molapo on this project and I am keen to get some testosterone on board. I am currently working with a lot of females, so this gentleman is refreshing . This week is the brainstorming period and next week we begin shooting. I am too keen to kill it.
My prints are being printed this weekend and will most probably be ready next weekend. Next week, once I have majority of the things that need to be delivered, such as the wine and prints complete, I will be making my way to drop it all off and  begin to visually conceptualize once again at the gallery.  I have officially given all the images titles and today will be organizing the electronic list to Deryck , who is the curator of the exhibition and the gallery manager.
I am expecting over 100 people at the opening, and so I am extremely excited to see those attending. I have a lot of work to do every single day, along with my assignments at school, but the major support from my friends and people I don’t know , is really the one thing that keeps me going.

Day 76 . 07 .07.2011

55 days until the opening

The pressure is on, but fortunately, I am on schedule.  The next submission date is on the 1st August, which is when I have to submit all the images for printing. The day I submit the images is probably the day it all sinks in. Those images will be the final series of works that I share with the public. EEEK.
Tomorrow I will be at the Rococo Studio gallery for our monthly meeting at 08:30. Ms Vuyi Mayosi will be joining me and I think it would be good to bounce off ideas with someone else other than my team members and Deryck.
I didn’t realize that I will need a photographer, on the main floor, for the night. I don’t think it will be an issue finding someone; I just need to find the right person. These are things I will probably be sorting out this week.

Day 51 . 12 .06.2011

80 days to go...

I have been mentioning Rococo Studio Gallery on Facebook, Twitter, BBM and BlogSpot but not many know how it looks inside. I am surprised I haven’t taken any photographs of it myself, so I have taken these two images of the gallery from the website, just to give you a little peak.

Images were taken by Deryck van Steenderen

Uhm... I cut my hair really short, so now I have short granny curls. I am writing on the 15th, so wish me luck. My birthday is in 4 days. Happy Birthday to my homie Keketso Moletsane :) .I don’t have much to share today, so that’s all folks.

Day 42 . 03 .06.2011

Productive meetings

The meeting at Rococo Studio Gallery went exceptionally well. We spoke about spacing, media coverage, the marketing of the event, how the drinks will be served, whether I will be using downstairs or upstairs to exhibit and the sizes of the pieces. I have never felt as great, after a meeting, as I did yesterday. Deryck van Steenderen, the general manager, has been so supportive throughout this journey. I really couldn’t ask for a better deal.

So the times have been confirmed. The doors will open at 6pm, the opening of the exhibition will officially commence at 7pm and then the night will come to an end at 12pm. Now that the times have been confirmed, I will be able to give Lisa Robertson (graphic designer) the information, so that the poster can be completed.

After this productive and exciting meeting, I left the gallery with the biggest grin feeling like thing are finally coming together. I find it so strange (this is the only word that best describes my feeling towards this) that this idea is becoming a reality. It’s been a lot of hard work, and as I always say, there is still so much to do.

I have exactly 89 days left, which is just under 3 months. I wonder how I am going to juggle exams, the vacation that I won’t compromise and the preparations for this exhibition. I’m keen for the challenge.

Day 41 . 02 .06.2011

Today it’s exactly 90 days until the opening...

I will be spending my morning alone in the city, playing around with my camera. I haven’t done that in a while and I do believe it’s about time that I do. Perhaps I might get some good pictures in the process.
After my play date with my camera, at 1pm, I will be having a meeting tomorrow at the gallery. I am hoping to confirm times and all the important information that is needed for the poster. I also haven’t been there in a while, so all the spacing I needed to do will all be done.

Day 33 . 25 .05.2011

This weekend will be my defining moment. If I can get through the list of ‘things to confirm for the exhibition’ this weekend, then I will be the happiest person alive. The artists statement still needs to be finalized, the series of works that will be up on the walls needs to be overlooked as obviously the significant things that will complete the exhibition need to be attended too.
I need to pay the Rococo Studio Gallery a visit on Friday, just to look at the space again. I tend to become obsessive with the visual ambience a place can create and I just want everything I vision to be a reality.
*sigh*

Day 21 . 13 .05.2011

A still moment in the chaos

As I predicted, Jana du Plessis would be the one person to understand my scattered ideas and help me to direct it. Things are falling into place slowly and I couldn’t be happier. My concept seems stronger and stronger every time I speak to my mentors and those who have experience in what I am trying to achieve. It’s finalized; my concept is solid and no longer generic.
Today is my day off and I feel like exploring the city on my own, as I used to when photography was still a fresh medium to me. I now understand why naïve art is so successful. I think it’s because its emotion is so pure (due to lack of knowledge) and there are no expectations when in the act, its simply fun. I hope I can find that again.
I am meeting Deryck van Steenderen tomorrow morning. I haven’t gone to Rococo Studio Gallery in a while, and I think its time to go in just to visualize the event. Visiting the place will remind me that there is no longer to take it day by day. It is time to work all day everyday.
